There are plenty of good reasons for the mature woman to consider short hair:
- It can be easier to take care of, depending on the style.
- It looks smart and professional.
- It's ideal for women who like to swim or do other sports.
- It can give your face a lift instead of dragging down your features as long hair can do.
Women with long tresses regularly devote huge chunks of their mornings to styling their hair. Years of long hair means years spent combing, curling, straightening, conditioning, trimming, braiding and otherwise maintaining that hair. That time adds up and women are capable of reaching their breaking point. Why deal when one can settle into a salon chair and let someone cut away the hassle?
Society's attitude dictating short hair on older women has been prevalent for a long time. Before the current century woman of all ages always had long tresses. The older the woman, the longer her hair except in rare circumstances.
Short hair became the latest fashion in the United States in the 1920s. Even then, the majority of older women kept their hair long periodically wearing it up in a variety of buns, twists or braids.
After World War II the hair care industry welcomed the introduction of the shampoo and wet curler set for short styles. Chemically permed styles also became prominent.
Older woman flocked to hairdressers and emerged with short curls, and waves. It became very fashionable to get your hair done every single week.
The weekly hairdresser visits did not encourage long hair.
Most hairdressers made more money if they trimmed and styled hair on a weekly or semi-monthly basis.
Older women with long hair were considered prime hair makeover subjects by the entire beauty industry.
Short hair for older women was the preferred style throughout the 1950s. When the 1960 ushered in the age of the long hair, older women continue to do the shampoo and set on their short styles.
Short hair for the middle-aged became the norm. It was rare to find older women with hair past their shoulders.
Many people still believe that older women should have short hair.
Aha! How surprising...
How often do you see older women with really long hair? Not often, right? It seems like by their late 30s or early 40s most women have given up on longer hair and go for the shorter cuts.
Long hair is a great way to stand out from the crowd throughout life. Even as you age, consider how wonderful you will look and feel with long hair you can put up however you like rather than having a shorter permed style. If that thought delights you, grow your hair out.
Inderdaad!
We're never too old for long hair. Modern science will tell you that age is only a state of mind. Maybe we haven't all figured out how to think ourselves twenty for eternity, but it's clear that people are aging more gracefully than ever.
If your hair is healthy and hasn't thinned drastically, you have every reason to stay long. Even if you're grays are slowly increasing, short hair doesn't have to be next step. Gray hair is often dry, but that only means you need more conditioner, not a bob.
Amen!
While today's standard beauty wisdom dictates older women should cut off their hair, there are no compelling reasons why long hair on mature women cannot be beautiful.
Damn right!

(P.S.: bovenste foto; Jane Seymour; actrice; Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, Bond-girl geweest, ...
